After exiting the boat, we saw a van waiting for us with
another girl and a car with no driver. “Guys, that is Becca. She is the only
mortal member of our coven. She’s scared of the pain” Nate mumbled the last
part, but the first part was clear. The girl behind the wheel of the car was
very pretty with wavy hair. She smiled when she saw us and got out of the van.
“Hi everyone” she said perkily, running up to us with a coffee in her hand. “I
heard you had a mortal with you so I figured I’d offer him some coffee” she
said, handing Matt a steaming Starbucks cup. Matt took it graciously and blew
on it a little before sipping at it. We split up, Nate and Drew taking Adam and
I and the others taking the van. The car was nice and warm and the conversation
was light. It seemed like we all were getting along great. However, my mind was
stuck on the Mark and Grace situation. Mark deserved happiness and he had been
happy in that picture with Grace. I was so lost in thought Adam had to kiss me
to get my attention back to reality. Drew and Nate laughed quietly when I
squeaked from surprise at my boyfriend’s PDA. Had I been able to blush, I would
have. In fact, I wasn’t fully sure I wasn’t bright red. I quickly came to my
senses when I saw the huge house in front of me. “Wow” I whispered, admiring
the enormous size of where we would now be living. “It’s impressive, huh?” Drew
mumbled, right behind me and I couldn’t even speak, I just nodded. He chuckled
and ran to the house, yelling “MOM, DAD WE’RE BAAAACK” he dragged out the last
word and I was curious as to who this mom and dad were. Drew laughed as I
looked confused and introduced me properly. “Mom, dad this is Shay and Adam.
Guys, this is Jacob and Jane, our ‘parents’.” He laughed as he said parents and
I couldn’t blame him. I loved Mark and all, but he would never be my dad. The
couple smiled and Jacob shook my hand while Jane went straight for a hug. It
surprised me a little, but I quickly hugged back, melting into the mother
figure’s arms. I was brought back to reality by the twins yelling about which
room was theirs. “All the third floor rooms are for your family, so feel free
to make yourselves at home. It’s a bit plain now, but you can decorate it
however you choose. The natives here accept us, they think we’re mortal. It’s
cloudy so often we are safe to have jobs and keep up appearances, so you can go
to the shops around town. If anyone asks, you are our relatives who came on
hard times and needed a place to stay.” Jane told us, but the young girls were
already off, running up the stairs to get the best rooms. “I’ll tell them
later” I assured her, hiding my laugh at the children’s eagerness. She smiled
and thanked me, and then Adam was dragging me to the stairs as well. “You’re as
bad as the girls” I laughed at him. He stuck his tongue out at me, making me
laugh even more, right up until he licked me. “EW!” I shrieked, wiping my face
where he licked me. He took off running and laughing. “You’re so weird!” I
yelled after him, walking up the stairs. I didn’t know what was getting into
that boy, but he was starting to be very touchy lately, almost clingy. I wasn’t
complaining, I’ve always wanted a close relationship, but it was just strange
how much he had changed. I got to the third floor and saw the hall was a T,
with one room right across from the stairs and saw the twins had grabbed
adjoining rooms. They had their own rooms, but one of the walls was a door
between the two, allowing them privacy while still being close. I thought it
was cute and didn’t comment on the fact it was most likely meant for a nursery.
Across the hall from them, Rachel had put her stuff. She was already thinking
of ideas for her rooms. Matt had grabbed the room closest to the stairs,
probably out of breath from the climb. That left one room at the end of the
hall on both sides and two rooms across from each other on the right. Adam
grabbed the room by Matt’s and I took the room across from it. Mark would have
to choose between the far rooms. I was just setting my small amount of stuff up
when I felt arms wrap around me. I looked and Adam was in my room. He had shut
the door and just one look in his eyes and I knew what he was thinking. “Adam,
there are other people around. We can’t” I mumbled, kissing him. He kissed me
back hard and I pulled away, out of breath. “They won’t bother us” he
whispered, and I finally gave in.

Things at home were really quiet. The police had found
nothing more after the video footage and mom and dad were slowly adjusting
again. I missed the others, missed seeing my sisters every day. It had barely
been a week but already I felt like I had actually lost them forever. Mark had
promised to call me as soon as they adjusted, but nothing yet. I looked at the
picture I had on my phone, from Christmas this year. It felt like forever ago,
but it hadn’t even been a month. I sighed as I got out of bed and went to get
something to eat. I saw mom watching old videos of me and my sisters, tears in
her eyes, and went to comfort her. Some days I forgot why it was so important
for me to be here, but deep down I know she needs me. Dad needs me too. I am
the rock holding their family together right now and as mom had just learned,
we were going to be a family again. She was pregnant again, twins this time.
Deep down, I knew they would never replace my sisters, but some days I wished
they would. I wished that the little lives my mother and father had created
could heal the hurt of having two babies ripped from their arms before. But
life doesn’t work that way. I was just about to cry with her when my phone
rang. I ran upstairs to answer it and almost cried with relief when I heard the
voice on the other line. “Hello?” I answered and a little voice answered back.
“Sissy?” I sighed and she went off. “You wouldn’t believe it here! Alaska is sooo
pretty sissy! Daddy lets me play in the snow and Jade shares a bed with me when
I get scared. She never used to do that, remember? You always had to and she
said I was a baby, but now she looks scared too.” I laughed because I
remembered it clearly. Lizzie would get scared during storms and she would beg
me to let her sleep with me, for comfort and I always gave in and when I awoke,
Jade was always there too. She would say it was because she hated being in the
room alone, but I know my girls. We were triplets after all. They were both
scared of thunder. “I miss you Anna” I heard her whisper before I heard a
shuffle and a calmer voice take over. “Hey sis. How’s life at home? How are mom
and dad holding up?” I took a breath before answering. “Things are… quiet. Mom
is pregnant, she’s having twins, so dad is busy setting up a nursery in your
and Lizzie’s old room. It’s tearful, they hate packing up your things, but they
have come to the conclusion you two won’t be back. It’s weird, Jade. I know the
truth and can’t tell them and it just… sucks” I said, finally letting the tears
come out. She made comforting noises and told me all about their new housemates
and I was surprised to hear how excited she was. My Jade was opening up, after
years of hiding. Even before she was turned, mom was scared she was alone too
often and tried getting her to open up. Who knew that it would take moving and
changing species. I heard footsteps so I hurriedly said goodbye and hung up. I
opened my math book just in time for dad to knock. “Come in” I called, grabbing
my notebook and pretending to be occupied. “Can we talk for a sec, kiddo?” he
asked, sitting on the end of my bed. “Sure” I said, smiling at him. “What’s
up?” He started wringing his hands and looked nervous. “Your mother and I are
worried you aren’t getting out enough, so your mother decided to set you up on
a date this Friday” he said, not making eye contact. I rolled my eyes. “Dad,
I’m not going. I am sixteen for crying out loud! Tell me to go to a party or
something and I’ll do it! But leave my dating life to me!” “Ok, Anna. I will
tell your mom you have plans for Friday. Don’t make a liar of me. Go out and do
something, get your mind off of your mom and the babies. They will be ok, I
promise” he said, kissing my head and leaving the room. Great, now I had to
find something to do this Friday… At least I had five days to find something.
