I woke up to laughter and shushing noises, letting me know
the twins were playing. I had never really thought I would be the kind of girl
to enjoy being around kids. I had never wanted any of my own or even thought I
would get the chance to have kids. But listening to those two play made me hope
that someday Adam and I would create a little vampire family of our own. I
slipped on shoes and went outside of the cave to see the twins climbing trees
in the twilight. “Evening, sweet peas” I whispered, and the two ran at me,
crushing me in a hug. “Can we wake up daddy?” Lizzie asked, and Jade looked at
her weird. “I-I meant Mark” Lizzie mumbled, correcting herself and her sister
relaxed. “Yeah, let’s wake everyone up and go to town. I think we are in need
of some shopping” I said with a smile and both girls cheered. Canada was a
pretty place, but I was ready to get to the shops. Mom and I had never had much
money, so I was going to enjoy not worrying about money. Mark gave me a wad of
cash and my eyes widened. Although I had expected enough to shop, I was
surprised at how much was really there. “Make sure the girls get plenty of
winter clothes. They need to blend in with the natives in Alaska, which will be
our next stop. Also, stock up on canned goods and dried meats for Matt. We
can’t have him starving on us.” Mark was giving orders and I was gladly taking
them, along with the girls. Lizzie wore her Christmas boots proudly through the
snowy streets and Rachel wrapped her scarf around the younger girl, smiling
when Lizzie laughed about it. From afar we would look like a normal human
family, a group of sisters out together. The mall was busy, but not too
crowded, perfect for blending in. I decided to start with coats and hats, those
being our biggest necessities. Rachel fell absolutely in love with a coat within
minutes. It was a pink pea coat, but she had found the perfect gloves and hat
for it already so I agreed. Jade was very reasonable. She found an army green
heavy coat with a fur lined hood and was happy with it. Lizzie went more girly
with a white frilly coat with a flower on it, but still warmer than
Rachel’s. I found an adorable checkered
jacket with a fur hood and we went to check out. Next store specialized in
winter accessories so it was easy for everyone to find gloves and hats. The
twins both found similar sets; Lizzie found penguins and Jade found owls. They
were adorable and who was I to say no to those angels? I was a little pickier.
I didn’t want to look too young but at the same time I was still a child at
heart. I decided on a rainbow hat and Rachel insisted I take her rainbow scarf
that I had given her for Christmas, using the excuse that she had just bought a
new one. There were gloves with my hat so we checked out again and decided it
was time for regular clothes shopping. After going through numerous shops and
spending the majority of our money surprisingly, we went home. Matt was
munching away on a burger from some fast food joint and when he saw we had
bought more food he cheered with his mouth full. Typical guy move, but all us
girls were still grossed out when food went flying out of his mouth. “Matt,
close your mouth you pig” I scolded him and he blushed and started chewing with
his mouth closed again. We noticed the guys had new clothes as well, a good
thing since winter wasn’t a real big thing back home. Matt finished eating and
we all packed up and headed off. We stopped when we got to a boat. There was a
beautiful girl with pink hair smiling at us from the middle of the boat and a
shaggy haired boy was driving the boat and flirting with a curly haired boy.
There was a curly haired girl staring at Mark and I knew that look anywhere.
She hadn’t even talked to the guy and already was mentally claiming him. “Are you Peighton?” Mark asked the pink haired
girl and she nodded quickly. “Yes and that is Grace, Andrew, and Nathan. I take
it you are the American coven coming to stay with us?” “Yes, ma’am” Mark
answered and if the girl could have blushed I knew she would have been. “I’m
Mark, the leader of our coven and the others can introduce themselves later.
Right now the sun is coming up and only Shay and Matt can be up with the sun”
Mark replied, heading for the hidden door to below deck. Everyone but Matt and
I followed, I wanted to talk to the guys alone and Matt sensed that, so he went
to talk to Grace and Peighton followed him like a lost puppy dog. I really
hoped he didn’t hurt her. She seemed fragile. As I drew closer to the boys,
their conversation stopped and the curly haired boy turned to face me. “Hello
love” he said, his British accent ringing clear as a bell. “Hey” I replied with
a smile, leaning against the boat. “I’m Shay, by the way” I said after a moment
of silence. The boy laughed. “That rhymed” he said with a smile. “I’m Drew, nice
to meet you” he continued and we both laughed. He seemed like an easy guy to
talk to and if he was Andrew, that meant “and I’m Nathan” the shaggy haired boy
said, eyeing me over. “his BOYFRIEND” he put emphasis on the word and I gave
him a reassuring smile. “That’s awesome” I said with a smile, getting confused
looks from both boys. “I mean, you seem like great guys and maybe me and my
boyfriend Adam can double date with you two sometime” I said with a smile,
hoping to ease Nathan’s jealousy. He seemed to relax at that, but still put his
arm around Andrew. Andrew didn’t seem to mind, he cuddled into Nathan’s arms
and I smiled and moved on to the next person. Matt had drifted over to a chair
on deck and was sharing it with Peighton. They looked quite comfy honestly. At
least he was trying to move on. Grace was staring at the door to the others.
“Hey Grace” I said, sitting next to her. She looked at me and tried to smile
but I knew it was forced. “What’s wrong?” I asked her. She was quiet for so
long I almost thought she was ignoring me. Then I saw she was crying, actually
crying. “I loved him” she whispered and she pulled out a picture. It was black
and white but it was obvious it was her and Mark. “What happened?” I asked,
intrigued to know what had torn them apart. “He was changed and I wasn’t for
another three years. By that point he was gone and I lost him.” She stared at
the picture and I knew that this needed fixed and I even had a plan. For now,
we had finally gotten to Alaska, so we exited the boat and prepared for our
next adventure.
