I found
myself staring at the door for way too long. I hadn’t seen him in what felt
like years but had really only been a few days. However, I knew everything had
changed since then. I was no longer a human and although he’d seen that before
he was half asleep. Eventually, I gathered the courage and knocked. When he
answered he had me in his arms in seconds. “Shayla” he whispered, almost as if
he thought I was imaginary. I hugged him back and he flinched. “You are
freezing, Shay” he remarked, dragging me inside. “Well, being a vampire will do
that to you” I joked, but I saw him freeze for a minute. Right, it’s still too
early to joke about this. I sighed, flopping on the couch in his living room
and flipping through the T.V. channels. Every channel was alternating between
showing me and Lizzie and Jade. They were tying the three of us together,
claiming a serial killer targeting children. Great, no wonder Mark freaked.
Matt was staring at me, looking confused. I turned the T.V. off. “Matt, can we
talk? I mean, it’s important or I wouldn’t be here.” He looked nervous, but he
nodded his head and walked over to sit next to me. “How would you feel about
moving?” I asked him and he laughed. As soon as he saw I wasn’t kidding he
seemed to consider it. “Shay, I have no money to move. I would be a horrible
addition to your little… coven” he spat the word like it was a bad word “and I
can’t up and leave in the middle of a police investigation of my father’s
murder.” The more he made excuses, the more I was determined to get him to
come. I mean, he didn’t say no, so he must want to go deep down. “Matt, Mark
sent me to invite you so obviously you fit in my FAMILY. You don’t need money
since we are handling everything, you just have to come, and Mark is already
being accused of kidnapping three kids, what’s one more in the mix?” I
chuckled, and he smiled slightly too. “I want you to come. I miss my best
friend” I tell him, reaching out for a side hug. He hugs me back and sighs.
“You know I could never say no to you. I love you too much” he whispered in my
hair, making the hairs on my neck rise. I hope he realized that I was with Adam
now. I mean, I thought he and Anna were getting really close, but it seems his
crush on me was still prominent. Fanfrickintastic… “Let’s go then” I exclaimed,
jumping out of my mood and back into the real world. “We are going to Alaska,
so pack all your winter stuff and take all your basics. I’m sure we’ll have
electricity since you are tagging along, so I’m positive you can charge
anything that you need, like your phone or music player.” I said, throwing
things into bags. Mark had said we each could have a maximum of three bags. That
was more than enough for Matt, he barely filled two. We set off after that,
never looking back. When we got to the cave we found everyone else had already
finished packing and were waiting around nervously for me to bring the human
in. This was a new thing for them, being exposed to humans. “Hello” Mark said,
stepping forward to shake his hand. Matt shook his hand and looked around,
trying to take everything in. “I am Mark, welcome to our coven. There are the
twins Lizzie and Jade” the twins waved as their names were said making Matt
smile “Rachel, who you might have met at school. She was the one who introduced
us all to Shay. And beside Shay is Adam, who is her mate.” Matt flinched at the
word mate and I mentally cringed. I could tell this was going to be an AMAZING
trip. Adam didn’t do well knowing Mark liked me and I had no relationship to
him. I can’t imagine what will be going on in his head if he figures out Matt
likes me too. He kept looking at Matt and I so I knew he knew something was up.
Great, I guess I might as well get this over with. “Adam, can we talk real
quick?” I ask him, dragging him towards the woods. He came with me willingly
and I didn’t miss the look Matt gave us as we left, almost desperate and lost.
“What’s up with him, Shay? I don’t like the way he looks at you” Adam
whispered, being sure not to say it to where Matt would hear. After all, he didn’t
want to scare or anger him; he just wanted to know what was going on. “Matt has a crush on me. He has for as long
as I can remember, but there is nothing between us other than friendship on my
end. He needs me, babe. Otherwise, I wouldn’t torture you by having him come
along but he is my best friend. He has saved my life numerous times just by
being there for me when nobody else was.” Adam was fuming when I first said
Matt liked me, but the more I went on, the more he seemed to relax. “Shay, I
know that he needs you and all, but do you really expect me to be okay with
this?! I mean, he’s your best friend. You can’t tell me that you won’t ever be
alone with him and you can’t tell me that he won’t ever try anything either. He
is a guy who doesn’t just have a crush, he loves you. Full on, deeply in love
with you! You can’t ignore that!” I rushed forward and hugged him, so tightly
if he was human he would have been crushed. However, he hugged me back just as
tight. “I love you, Shayla Harper” he whispered in my ear, and I shivered
because his voice was so raw and full of emotion I couldn’t help but kiss him.
Things would have gotten out of hand quickly if it wasn’t for the throat
clearing behind us. We turned to see Rachel looking uncomfortably at the ground
and I knew if it was possible she would have been blushing. “I’m sorry guys but
Mark says we need to leave. Like, now. The cops are at the edge of the woods
and about to come in.” That killed the mood real quick. We rushed back to the
cave and grabbed our things. Matt was going to have to be carried and seeing as
Adam was being clingy, not that I minded, Rachel volunteered. We set off and even at vampire speed we knew
it would take a while. After running for a few hours we saw a sign saying we
were in Canada. “This is where we stop for the night. There are shopping
centers close enough that we can go and get fresh clothes for you girls and
Adam, but stay hidden if possible, and feed Matt. I don’t know when our next
chance for food will be. But for now, rest; it’s almost daylight and I refuse
to have any of you pass out on me. Matt, sorry dude but can you sleep during
the days for a bit?” Mark was in full out dad mode, bossing us all around and
Matt looked wide awake, but he immediately lay down in the cave and was soon
asleep. We all followed suit.
